It’s Time to Choose, and Time to See this New Movie!

This Friday June 3 is the day — the day that Time to Choose opens in theaters nationwide!

Time to Choose, produced by solar veteran Tom Dinwoodie, is an important documentary that highlights solutions and shows the path forward in response to the pressing issue of climate change.

What’s different about Time to Choose

While Time to Choose is a compelling film, it’s not the only film about climate change. It’s not even the only film about climate change to come out this year — or even in the last few months.

But Time to Choose stands out because it doesn’t just focus on the problem. We’re all hammered daily with stories about how bad things are. Even for those of us working in clean energy, that message feels overwhelming.

That’s not to say that Time to Choose skirts around the issue. Academy-Award-winning director Charles Ferguson (Inside Job, No End in Sight) does a stellar job of showing the devastation we’ve caused around the globe by our reliance on dirty fossil fuels.

The images of some truly ugly things happening around the world are a key ingredient in making this movie so powerful. They show us in a visual, very direct way how serious and widespread the problem is. We see clearly how every part of the globe is affected. And we see how none of us can escape what’s happening. Climate change truly affects everyone.

But as former Energy Secretary Steven Chu asks in the film, “What do you do if you have that information? What do you do?”

This is where Time to Choose truly shines.

We can change how we do things

The devastation shown in each section of the film stands in stark contrast to a vision of a hopeful alternative. For each of the main topic areas the film covers — 1) coal and electricity, 2) oil and cars, 3) land and food — Ferguson highlights solutions that are available now.

We have the clean energy technology we need. We have alternatives to gas-powered cars and urban sprawl. We have better ways to grow and consume our food.

While solutions are out there for every contributor to climate change, we tend to hear a lot more about the problems. That’s why a film like Time to Choose is so essential.

The overriding message of this film is that climate change is not just a huge problem. It’s also a major opportunity — an opportunity to make changes that will significantly improve much more than just our environment (though that would be enough for us!). We’re also talking about our economies, our health, our security — nothing short of our emotional, physical, and social well-being.

It’s time for us to make these changes.

As Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, asserts in the film, “The future has turned into the present. We can create a society that is powered by clean energy. The benefits will be enormous.”

See the movie and spread the word!

Let’s make sure as many people as possible learn about those benefits.
